From the Editor

On behalf of the Board of the Southern California Chapter of ARLIS/NA, I would like to extend greetings to the members of ARLIS/SC! It was great to see so many members at the National Conference in Baltimore, at the sessions, events, and at our joint luncheon with ARLIS/NC. Your membership and support at the chapter level helps ARLIS/NA to put on valuable and memorable conferences. I encourage all members to actively recruit and mentor emerging visual arts information professionals, so that they may enjoy the benefits of membership in ARLIS/SC. The Board will be planning what it anticipates to be valuable and interesting local programs for the coming months. Please send your ideas and suggestions, and let us know if you would like to volunteer your institution to host a meeting this fall or winter. And I hope to see many ARLIS/SC members July 31 to August 3 in Portland, Oregon at the ARLIS/NA Western Regional Conference co-sponsored by ARLIS/SC.

--Rina Vecchiola, Chair, ARLIS/SC

News from the West Regional Representative

The ARLIS/NA annual conference in Baltimore was a very enjoyable, informative, and busy one. The new officers were officially welcomed and seated on the Executive Board of the Society -- including ARLIS/Southern California's very own Judith Hershmann as Secretary.

At the pre-conference Executive Board meeting, the Board accepted the invitation of ARLIS/Texas-Mexico to hold the 2005 annual conference in Houston, Texas; the Board accepted the renewal of our contract with our management firm, Clarke Association Services, for another 3-year term; and the Board thanked the ARLIS/Texas-Mexico chapter's Mexican Relations Committee for their efforts to recruit art library professionals from Mexico.

Among the topics discussed by the Board at its post-conference meeting were scheduling of conferences, the potential for developing continuing education programs, membership recruitment issues, and the structure of the Society. I encourage everyone to watch ARLIS-L for announcements and discussions as the Board works on its very full agenda throughout the year.

The dates for the next ARLIS/NA annual conference are April 15-20, 2004, in New York City. The conference hotel will be the Hotel Roosevelt, which was recently renovated. New York promises to be a lively and stimulating conference, and I hope many ARLIS/SC members will be able to attend.

On April 25, I attended the ARLIS/Northern California spring meeting at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. Surrounded by a gorgeous setting and welcomed with a generous amount of convenient breakfast items, Northern California members discussed chapter recruitment and outreach, travel awards, and future sites for chapter meetings. The building project combining the San Jose State University main library with the San Jose city public library was also discussed, and members gave reports from sessions they attended at the ARLIS/NA and VRA annual conferences this year.

I will attend the ARLIS/West regional conference, July 31-August 3, 2003, in Portland, Oregon. I hope to see many of you in Portland!

Academic Library News

University of California Art Librarians met at the ARLIS/NA Annual Conference in Baltimore to discuss campus and library budget cuts, serials cancellations, and new California Digital Library resources. A multi-campus committee, the Visual Resources Task Force, completed a survey of analog and digital images at UC campus libraries for standards and usage. Some of the findings of the VRTF were that it will require a lot of resources and infrastructure to create a union catalog of images; there is a lack of standards; that the report only includes a fraction of the images in campus collections since only the libraries' collections were surveyed; and many special collections materials were not counted since they are embedded in finding aids. UC Art Librarians will be working on ways to develop cooperative collections.

Museum Library News

SBMA

The Santa Barbara Museum of Art has a new librarian in the Fearing Library as of March 4, 2003. Heather Brodhead was an art librarian in the Music & Art Dept. of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh for 8 years before moving to Santa Barbara in 2001. Prior to earning her MLS in 1992, when she first joined ARLIS/NA, Heather was in management with an international business service for 27 years in New York City, Honolulu, and Pittsburgh. Her undergraduate and graduate studies were in applied arts and art history. The Fearing Library position is 3 days a week with 5-day-a-week challenges, which Heather says draws on her varied work experiences. She also works as a part time reference librarian at Santa Barbara City College and the Santa Barbara public library.

Report: Visual Resources Association Southern California Chapter Meeting, May 23, 2003

VRA/SC met at Scripps and Pomona Colleges in Claremont. At the morning business meeting, the chapter discussed professional development workshops for beginning VR curators, planning for a joint NC and SC workshop on cataloging contemporary art, nominations for chapter officers, and the upcoming fall meeting. After the meeting, the group toured the ceramics "vault" of the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery, a hands-on storage facility, and listened to a presentation on the Gallery's collection management database. While walking between Scripps and Pomona Colleges, the group admired murals by Alfredo Ramos Martinez, Jose Clemente Orozco, and Rico Lebrun. After lunch in the courtyard near the Art History Department, Professor Frances K. Pohl gave a presentation on the conceptualization, production, and publication of her new American Art textbook Framing America: A Social History of American Art. The day ended with a visit to the Pomona College Museum of Art and a reception at the Visual Resources Collection.
