Culver City Galleries Tour
Friday, September 9th of 2005, ARLIS-SC held its fall event in Culver
City, CA where some of the Los Angeles-area contemporary art galleries
were putting their best foot forward for the new season. Culver City
has an interesting history as the home of MGM studios which produced
such classics as Gone With the Wind and Wizard of Oz but is also
a neighborhood that since the 1990s has been having a revival as
evidenced
by its many restaurants, shopping areas and somewhat underground
gallery scene. According to the Wikipedia, <www.wikipedia.org>, an influx
of multiple art galleries to this area, “prompted the New York
Times in 2005 to praise the new art scene and call Culver City a
nascent Chelsea."
The beautifully restored Culver Hotel served as our meeting point, where
ARLIS-SC members and friends sipped drinks and sampled gourmet cheeses.
A 1924 landmark pie slice-shaped hotel in downtown, the hotel gained
notoriety when the Munchkin cast of The Wizard of Oz stayed here during
filming of the movie in 1939. Formerly owned by John Wayne, the hotel
has housed many Hollywood stars including Clark Gable, Greta Garbo, Joan
Crawford, Red Skelton, Buster Keaton and Ronald Reagan.
From there, attendees carpooled over to a nearby neighborhood just off
La Cienega and Washington Boulevards. The neighborhood was an interesting
mix of muffler shops, taquerías, and art galleries all within
an easy stroll of one another. It was a lively scene as evidenced by
the diversity of ages, including surprising abundance of babies and children,
and a wide representation of art from more traditional paintings to multimedia
works composed of video, audio, electronics, plastic, rubber and paper.
The end of the evening brought tired feet but stimulated emotions.
